When people get sick, it’s pretty common practice to go see the doctor.
But along my health journey, I ended up firing most of mine…
Because I wanted to get to the root cause of my symptoms and they didn’t know any better than to lead me down the endless road of prescription drugs.
See, I wanted more.
But it quickly became clear that the key to long-lasting health would have to come from within….
Several years later, I’d consider myself the CEO of my own health – and I couldn’t have done it without the help of the SCD diet and a few key supplements.
Our friend Rachel had a very similar experience; after several failed appointments and being slapped with a life sentence to prescription drugs, she too realized her healing would have to be self-led.
Continue reading to see just how much Rachel was able to overcome… simply by trusting her own intuition.
My Childhood Was Plagued By Frequent Stomach Aches
From the age of 15, I had stomach problems, the occasional heartburn and my first gastroscopy. The stomach aches never seemed that serious, but they found an ulcer.
(After all, my mother and father also suffered from ulcers so it seemed quite normal.)
One Day I Woke Up, And Knew Something Was Horribly Wrong
Fast forward 15 years and one day the illness hit me like a bomb. I woke up one day with this huge belching stomach. It was like I was pregnant. My stomach felt swollen up and I could not move and walk properly. I could not eat because it felt like it would just sit there for days and not move.
So, off to the doctor I went.
I Was Prepared For a ‘Quick Fix’ Appointment
The doctor told me I had swelling in my stomach and gave me Nexium, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) designed to reduce stomach acid. I was to take this for a week or two. After two weeks, my stomach improved but I still had some problems. I still couldn’t eat, as it felt like the food would not move through me. It didn’t matter if I ate a really small meal or even drank a cup of water, still the food lingered.
Appointment #2 Resulted in a Life-Long Prescription to Omeprazole
I made another appointment soon afterwards, as directed by the doctor. After the examination, I was told I had inflammation in my esophagus. They gave me omeprazole (another PPI) and told me to check back later.
When I returned in 6 months only to report the same symptoms, the doctor told me I’d need to take the drug for the rest of my life.
Can I Really Take a Pill For the Rest of My Life?
I stood there motionless. I am healthy and strong… how can I take pills for the rest of my life? However, I didn’t know what else to do than follow the doctor’s orders.
Even after seeking out other advice from different doctors, I was told to stay on this drug for the rest of my life.
I tried to just move on and forget about it, but it was hard.
The PPI Side Effects Began to Take Their Toll…
The more I took omeprazole the more old I felt dizzy and weak.
One day, I was at work and I felt so dizzy that I hit the floor. I was taken to the hospital to see what caused me to collapse. Doctors told me to stay for an observation to check if it was coming from the heart.
The test results came back clear for my heart.
The PPIs Slowly Became My Worst Enemy
The side effects became worse and more started to show up. I began to feel dizzy all the time and my eyes were beginning to be affected. I began to feel drowsy, experience low blood pressure and suffer from an iron deficiency.
In the past, magnesium would help me feel better but not this time.
I Couldn’t Live This Way Anymore
One day, I was on Facebook and happened to see a post about the negative effects omeprazole can have on the body when consumed for long periods of time. (I took it for two and a half to three years). This was really scary for me to read, to say the least.
Not only that, but the post linked to an article by SCD Lifestyle that stated PPIs can deplete your body’s own vitamin B12 stores, increase the risk of cancer, cause malabsorption issues, and much more!
The Way I Was Feeling Began to Make Sense
I felt very sad after I read that, but more than that – frightened. It scared the hell out of me, yet also made a lot of sense. This is why I felt old and fatigued and had the worst dry skin.
I was totally depressed. So, right then and there I made a decision to stop cold turkey*. (I don’t recommend this, but I was young and felt the side effects were worse.)
*SCD Lifestyle does not promote stopping prescribed medications cold turkey – please work with your health practitioner to come up with a plan that is right for you.
I Knew There Had to Be a Better Way
I felt trapped, like I had to pay the price whether I decided to continue or stop. However, I made a decision. I quit taking the drug even though doctors and other people told me otherwise.
My doctor didn’t want me to stop them, that was clear. Days passed by and I went to seek help from a different doctor, in hopes they could tell me something different.
I was told, again, that PPIs were my only option.
I Took Matters Into My Own Hands
Finally, realizing I wouldn’t receive any help from the doctors, I knew I had to become my own healer. I tried taking tumeric, aloe vera and Baobab powder to name a few, but nothing helped.
I was feeling this severe heartburn nearly all day long and it was so much to endure. I thought I was going to die of the pain but I survived.
I am a fighter.
I Found SCD Lifestyle and Things Began to Turn Around
I looked and researched on the internet and stumbled upon the SCD Lifestyle website. Wow – I read and read. They seemed to have all the answers to the hell I was going through.
I bought the ebook that was suggested for my stomach problems.
To my amazement, I finally found out that what doctors were saying all along was not true.
I Became My Own Doctor
We all have this misconception that stomach acid is somehow bad. Well, I now know that it’s rarely the case but the doctors are all for giving PPIs with no concern at all.
I made good progress, but I was still suffering with the bloating. The food continued to sit in my stomach causing pain and a heavy feeling.
The Magic of Betaine HCl
I tested out some Betaine HCl, as SCD Lifestyle pointed out how important it is to digestion.
And since adding in the Betaine HCl, the food no longer sits in my stomach. As an added bonus, I’ve lost a bit of weight too!
I know the road is not totally over yet, but at least I’m medication free and traveling the right road.
Words of Encouragement
For those of you who are scared of changing your diet or getting off those medications, I want you to know that you know your body better than anyone else.
You owe it to yourself to become your own health advocate.
I commend Rachel for her bravery and not giving up.
