After 25 Years of Diarrhea-Induced Isolation, SCD Brings Relief

You know the saying “Too much of a good thing, can be a bad thing”?

It applies in so many situations – but there’s usually an exception to any rule.

And so as I write this, I’m asking myself, “Is it possible to ever have too many success stories?”

Nope, especially this day in age with all the bad news we’re being fed 24/7.

See, back when I was sick, I couldn’t get enough of success stories. After my family went to bed, I’d stay up reading.

To read about someone with similar symptoms who had overcome them infused me with peace and gave my perseverance a boost – if they could do it, I knew I could too.

Though I’ve regained my health, I still love sharing and reading success stories. I hope that stories, like this one about our friend Rebecca, can have the same impact on you as they did on me years ago.

After 25 years of digestive symptoms from Celiac disease that kept her trapped at home while her kids were growing up, Rebecca found relief after just 4 days on SCD.

5 months later, she’s continuing to improve and embrace life again after years of isolation and embarrassment.

If you’re ready to see a transformation like Rebecca did, read on below and check out our SCD Lifestyle eBook.

My symptoms started the day I was born with a bacterial intestinal infection that lasted two weeks and I had my first doses of antibiotics. I was plagued with ear infections throughout elementary school and treated with many rounds of antibiotics through the years.

My first experience with diarrhea/cramping/constipation started in the ninth grade. I would be sick for several days and then would be fine for months. I would eventually have seven diagnoses of IBS throughout high school and college.

Also, during that time, I became extremely congested (nose and ears) and was put on another three rounds of antibiotics. I finally went on a daily allergy pill and the congestion cleared up dramatically. But the diarrhea and loose bowels only worsened.

Several times throughout my teen years I would try to figure out if the foods I was eating were causing my problems, but was never successful. I also didn’t know anyone else who suffered with diarrhea, so it became a secret that only my family knew about.

My Symptoms Isolated Me…

I got married at 21 and had my first child at 23. My intestinal issues plagued me on and off for the next ten years (and three more babies). One of my sons was a member of a travel soccer team and I had to stop traveling with the family. Unless the trip was less than an hour and I knew the layout of the soccer field bathroom facilities, I didn’t go.

I also left the kids with my husband whenever I needed to go shopping, because I never knew when I would have to spend 10-20 minutes in the public restroom. When I hit my mid-thirties, I often didn’t leave the house unless completely unavoidable. I was embarrassed and didn’t want anyone to know of my health issues other than my immediate family.

I Finally Got a Diagnosis

In January of 2010, I tested positive for Celiac and had an endoscopy and colonoscopy to determine if it was an accurate blood test. Actually, I was thrilled to finally find out what was wrong with me and that it didn’t require any medicine to get better. I was told that as long as I ate gluten free, my intestines would heal and I would get better.

But I didn’t get better.

In fact, the urgency of bowel movements got worse and dictated my life. As soon as I had the urge, I had to get to the bathroom ASAP! People would always ask me if I had cheated on my gluten free diet. Of course not, I NEVER cheated! I was so scared that I would get even worse!

Around 2012, I heard about the Specific Carbohydrate Diet from a lady in the area who was into nutritional healing. I researched it online, but already cooking for a husband, one son that has Type 1 Diabetes and three other kids was overwhelming with the gluten free… SCD seemed over-the-top for my mental state. I continued for the next four years staying close to home and eating gluten free – and gaining fifteen pounds.

I Got Worse… and Desperate

In December 2015, I was researching “how to avoid diarrhea on a car trip” and happened to stumble across an advertisement for SCD Lifestyle.

I was at a point in my life where I was desperate. My anxiety level had increased drastically and I spent so much time in prayer BEGGING the Lord to heal me – or at least get me through the next thirty minutes! I now had a kid in college, two in high school and was homeschooling my eleven year old. I didn’t want to waste another day of my life NOT LIVING.

I truly believe that the Lord was orchestrating my healing by sending me to SCD. I downloaded all the introductory materials and began reading them over and over. I decided to get through the holidays and then I would start.

February 1, 2016 was the beginning day of healing for my body. I prepped the chicken soup, made hamburgers, carrots and gelatin and started the next morning.

Adjusting to the SCD Lifestyle

I’m not going to sugar-coat this! The first day was awesome – I was excited and felt like I could eat these limited foods forever. The second day was difficult – I was extremely tired and achy and just wanted to eat sugar. The third day was one of the worst days of my life – I counted down the minutes until the day would end. I was so hungry and depressed since I wasn’t tolerating the gelatin at all! And since I’d stopped my allergy medicine, I was a congested mess!

And then, I woke up on the fourth day with no stomach pain and couldn’t believe that I felt better than I had in 25 years!

I slowly added new foods. I wasn’t able to tolerate eggs or gelatin and had to stick to pureeing foods for longer than most people. I also found that making large amounts of meat and eating leftovers would cause headaches and ear pain…this was possibly from the histamines in leftover meat. I tried eating homemade goat’s milk yogurt, but it caused extreme bloating, so I just ordered the probiotics that SCD recommended. I also started the multivitamin and digestive enzymes for extra help.

I continued to add in foods every few days and before I knew it, I was at three months and feeling well. I still have ear/nose congestion and there have been a few days in the last five months that I’ve had to stay close to my bathroom. I haven’t progressed from a ½ teaspoon of goat’s milk yogurt, but I’m going to stick with it.

I count it a blessing that I’ve always loved to meal plan and be in the kitchen! The hardest part of this lifestyle is in the beginning when I would cook a meal for my family, and then sit and watch them eat while I ate my hamburger and pureed carrots. But I just kept trusting that the Lord was healing me through this diet and my family was so supportive!

Five Months In, Drinking Coffee with My Husband

Five months later… I’ve taken my mom on a ten hour car trip to see her great-grandbabies with NO bathroom emergencies. I’ve visited Washington DC with my family for the Cherry Blossom Festival and walked around for four days without an accident. I eat most vegetables, limited fruits, meat and most nuts.

I’ve added in eggs periodically and here’s the most amazing thing…I’ve NEVER been able to tolerate coffee. But my husband loves coffee and I love the idea of having breakfast on our deck drinking coffee and planning our day. I sit with him and drink my cup of ½ coffee, ½ homemade almond milk. It makes me smile just thinking about it!

That may seem so simple. But it’s those things, like holding my coffee cup, that I’ve grown to appreciate the most.

Thank you SCD Lifestyle, for all of your support and the amazing work you are doing to help people take control of their health. I hope you know how much your time and effort is deeply appreciated!
