How Carly Finally Healed Her Gut After Struggling with Celiac Disease for 8 Years

How long did you struggle with your digestive pain? Did it feel like a black cloud followed you everywhere you went?

Because that’s how my life felt as I struggled with Celiac disease. Honestly, battling this illness for the better part of a decade was mentally and physically draining. I made a lot of mistakes and sometimes didn’t know if I’d ever get better.

I got really good at doing one thing that really made a difference, though. Sure, all of the diet, supplements and lifestyle changes were absolutely vital to my recovery, but it was pain that got me through and out the other side. I got really good at using my pain to push me through all the tough times.

I’m so grateful now to be able to say that my gut is healed and more and more time has passed since I had agonizing diarrhea 10-15 times per day. But I’ve got to say, the memory of that pain is still right there. It keeps me focused on continuously taking care of my body, so I can be the best father, friend and health engineer I can be. And every once in a while we get an email, seemingly from out of nowhere, from someone who is totally on the same wavelength.

With that said, I’d like to introduce our latest rockstar, Carly, who much like myself was given the standard Celiac disease prescription (a gluten-free diet) and sent on her way.  At first, this can seem like you’ve been given a golden ticket to a healthy and happy life.

After all, your doctor knows best right? Well, if you’ve been following us for any length of time, you’ll know that most Celiacs are slowly dying, because the Gluten-Free diet is simply not enough.

Read on to learn what it took for Carly to heal and feel better than she ever thought she could.

Two Years Ago, I Felt Like I Was Dying

I had been diagnosed with Coeliac disease at 19 (I am now 27), advised to eat gluten-free, and sent on my way. There was no mention of gut healing, or gut flora, or anything restorative by my doctor. Initially, all my doctor did for me was a blood test. I then went to see a naturopath who sent away for comprehensive stool tests, hair mineral analyses, and blood tests. She found I had systemic Candida, a compromised gut, and that both detoxification channels of my liver were blocked. She put me on a healing protocol for about 1 year.

I did start to feel a lot better at that point, but then I moved to a different city, and had not changed my diet or lifestyle, so my health gradually declined again.

I Decided to Go Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free and Soy-Free

Like my medical doctor had originally suggested and after an initial relief period of about one year, my health began to progressively degrade over the next six years. During these several years after my Coeliac diagnosis, I ate as much organic and chemical-free produce as possible and I did consume a lot of grains like quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat and millet. I also stopped drinking alcohol at about age 24 and never really liked anything too sweet, so I avoided conventional sweets. In an attempt to feel better, I also transitioned away from dairy, soy, and caffeine but still no results.

I realize now that although many of the alternative therapies and medicines may have helped, they did not address the root cause…

I could not eat anything…

It reached a point two years ago where I could not eat anything without it coming straight out the other end of me. My memory, focus, and emotions were in a constant downward spiral. I was losing a lot of weight due to constant diarrhoea, had incredible lethargy, and seemingly constant abdominal pain.

I Was Ready for an Even Bigger Change

My sister, who also suffered from digestive malaise, found the SCD diet online, started it herself, felt amazing benefits and strongly recommended it to me.

At the time, I was a vegetarian, and had been since I was about 18 years old, so it was a massive deal to transition to eating meat again. I remember crying over the chicken as I prepared it in the slow cooker each time I made broth. I had stopped eating meat from an ethical standpoint and the way I overcame this was to purchase only the highest quality, ethical, organic meat, and to buy it as whole as I could find. This was so that I could honor it and prepare it myself at home, as close to it as possible. I used to turn on the SCD Lifestyle Solution Podcast each time I was to cook meat, so as to have the support of others going through this healing process.

I used the free eBook and eating guidelines; I stuck them up on my wall. I listened to the SCD Lifestyle Solution Podcast every day and during making my broth to help get me through. Hearing the information on that podcast really inspired me and gave me a sense of community for my healing journey. I maintained a grain-free diet for about 1.5 years and drank broth almost daily.

My Health Returned, But Not Just to What I Thought Was Normal

I skyrocketed past normal into amazing. My memory, focus, and energy came back, and my emotional roller coaster was now just coasting. The SCD diet was the beginning of my health rebirth, and for that I am eternally grateful. I am a massive broth maker still, and intend to always be.

While I stuck to the 5 phases exactly as laid out for about 6 months, I continue to refrain from Nightshades, Grains, Caffeine, Cacao, Sugar, Alcohol, Dairy, and Soy. My diet will always consist of meat, fish, eggs, a large variety of vegetables, a little fruit (mainly green apples, limes, berries), chicken/beef broth, and lots of greens (both cooked and raw).

Over the years, I saw many practitioners, from acupuncturists, to naturopaths, osteopaths, chiropractors, medical/alternative practitioner blends. Each one had important input into my health learning and evolving.

And of course, I have always tried to remain optimistic. I remind myself that the gut is the seat of health and I like to keep a pristine seat.

I live in South Africa….where domestic workers are the norm and very sadly many live on or below the breadline and medical help is poor. My sons part time maid has had pains in her abdominal area for sometime. She feels uncomfortable when she eats and says she fears food.
The government hospital have her on a waiting list for a scope. She now has back ache and even leg pains.
She has three grandchildren to support and sadly has to work
Can you recommend anything in way of diet etc that can help her
Meds are restricted to what government institutions hand out. We gave her gaviscon, atype of tummy liner for ulcers but apparently it made the burning worse.
We try to help with foods for her, but the staple diet here is chimoy…a type of spinach and mealie meal or beans. The beans and meat hurt her. I advised her to have good veg soup but not sure what she does at home
Many thanks
Juanita
Any advice is welcome
