Hey guys,
I tried SCD for LPR, a form of reflux distinct from GERD. I had been on a low fiber, low residue diet by doctors orders so it had been a long time since id eaten the standard diet, specifically i ate hardly any fresh green vegetables.
On SCD, I’ve developed pain and weakness in my bones and joints. Also I have intermittent pain around the gallbladder area.
I haven’t been able to stay on SCD entirely, but I used a lot of bones in making my broth. I still have my original problem and wonder if I’ve developed some sort of calcium-mg dysfunction. Does that make sense?
Does anyone ever have problems eating so much meat/bone stock?
Thanks, I’m trying to piece it all together.
Hi Bryan – great to hear from you.
Whenever I hear that someone has trouble with meat/fats like you describe I find low stomach acid. Next, when I have someone with GERD heartburn issues it’s also a sign of low stomach acid… so you’re showing a lot of signs of low stomach acid.
GERD/Heartburn is typically related to intra-abdominal pressure from low stomach acid (I know, doesn’t seem right).
I’d highly recommend that you read Chris Kresser’s GERD/Heartburn series to learn more and start testing out Betaine HCL supplementation.
If you have proper stomach acid support in the form of Betaine HCL you’ll be able to break down fats and proteins better and it will aleviate your GERD/Heartburn symptoms over time.

Bryan,
I was having such terrible GERD and literally spitting up my food and choking on it while I was eating and afterwards before I followed Jordan and Steve’s advice to try to Betaine HCL. It works so well! Took me a few weeks to really get the dose right, but now I’m set. Between that and the digestive enzymes they recommended, I’m doing so much better!

Awesome Gutsy Girl – I’m so happy to hear that you’re getting good results after we talked! You rock

I have tried the Betaine HCl, single dose of about 300mg, and I tend to get a burning irritation in my left upper-mid abdomen and, a few minutes later, discomfort down lower in left guts around the waistline.
So I dunno.
Digestive enzymes seem to help without discomfort.
Again, I dunno. I am going to re-listen to your podcast on SIBO.
Thanks for your hard work.
Bryan
Hey guys,
I just some labs back and my ANA returned POSITIVE and the titre was out of range as well. My doc is worried about rheumatoid arthritis coming down the pike, but my concern is still my gut from which all this comes.
Do you feel like SCD is a proper response to leaky gut? Can permeability be fixed or can improvement be seen within a month or two? I have several potential avenues of treatment but they disagree with each other.
Also do guys frequently hear from people fighting both SIBO and Leaky Gut? I have unbelievable sweet cravings that I give in to every singel time within a couple of weeks. I quit smoking, I quit drinking, I’ve quit coffee… I’ve never had such a hard time as I’ve had with these cravings for confections.
Thanks for all your hard work sharing your knowledge with people like me.
Bryan
PS – I should add, I am interested in your opinion only. I know you’re not a doctor.
Hi @Bryan – great question.
SCD was made to starve out SIBO, it’s very effective, but it does take time.
I had SIBO and leaky gut and SCD has helped me with both… however, there’s many thing that effect leaky gut and I’ll be going over them in my Celiac Series so stay tuned for that.
There’s things you can do along with SCD to help, and managing stress is one of them because stress is consistently linked to leaky gut in research.
Stay tuned,
Jordan
