The SCD Diet Works Twice On Patrick’s Crohn’s Disease… Even After Surgery (Podcast 28)

by Jordan Reasoner

Recently, we got an email about The Specific Carbohydrate Diet and Crohn’s disease that was so inspirational I shared the story with my family… This was how it started off:

I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in 1989 when I was 13 years old. After years of medications (Prednisone, Asycol, Mesasol,…) and no control over the disease, my gastro strongly suggested that we operate.

But it quickly got awesome:

I followed the (SCD) diet very closely for about 7 years living with awesome energy, no pain, and as normal a life as any teen. I started to add new foods to the SCD and had no symptoms of Crohn’s. Life was great.

And the coolest part? He included a picture of his signed copy of “Food and Gut Reaction” (The original title of Elaine Gottschall’s “Breaking the Vicious Cycle”):

But There Was a Twist…

The email took an emotional turn:

In February 2004, I still had no symptoms of Crohn’s, yet in the early morning of one day I woke up with unimaginable pain in my right abdomen…  I had emergency surgery to remove my ileum and appendix, unfortunately they didn’t remove the barium and after surgery the barium solidified and ruptured my intestines, spilling into my abdominal cavity… Ever since I’ve been dealing with daily constant intense pain.

But that’s when Patrick revealed the most powerful part of his story… how SCD worked again… even after his surgery:

My progress has been solid and my pain is all but gone. At the most I get one episode of pain per day lasting nothing more then 30 minutes or so. I’m now ready to live on this diet for the rest of my life. I don’t want to ever get the same pain I’ve felt for so long.

And in today’s podcast, we had the honor of interviewing Patrick about treating his Crohn’s disease with SCD… twice. I really think you’ll enjoy it 🙂

Inspiring story, seems like Patrick’s issues were exacerbated by some malpractice on the part of the doctors and surgeons caring for him. Crohn’s can be beaten, but it’s requires lifelong vigilance. This applies for anybody even the people symptom free for years. Thinking your free to do anything is not realistic. SCD/Supplementation/Exercise/Stress management and an active social life is the only effective long term treatment.

I applaud Patrick for enduring and overcoming his really challenging circumstances. It’s amazing for him to have gone through so much at such a young age and to grow and mature and do what he must for himself. If only more people knew about SCD. He is a great example.
