Jan the Food Lady SCD Legal Food Review – Crackers and Snack Foods!

by Steven Wright

If you remember, we did a spotlight of our new friend Jan a little awhile ago. She started cooking SCD style to help out a friend of hers. Then, she got so good at it that she created a cookbook (sold out – but reprint is coming soon) and now offers SCD friendly food for sale. I say SCD friendly because some of her baked goods include chocolate, which we all know is illegal. They are clearly marked, so there shouldn’t be any confusion.

After we spotlighted Jan and started to develop a great new friendship, she decided to graciously send us some of her food products to review. For the record, it was all her idea and we received the samples free of charge (and therefore obliged to CHOW DOWN!).

Something else Jan did (that was totally AWESOME) is she decided to put a free holiday season gift together for our readers (only until Dec 31st). If you’re a first time purchaser and mention our Blog in the comment section of your order form, she is going to throw in a free bonus of SCD Legal Honey Nut Granola with your order! You’ll read what I think of it later but suffice to say the stuff is as addictive as SCD yogurt!

As for the food review, I tried to give objective feedback as I tasted each of the foods. For me, the taste of a food really breaks down to 2 variables, texture and flavor. If you get these two things right, you’ve got a winner. If one is off, it can really ruin a food for me. So with that said, I took the time to act like a super food snob and try to paint the best picture I could for you to understand what you will get when you order from Jan.

Jan sent us a pretty huge box with all types of foods, check it out…

In this first post, we are only going to review the crackers and baked snacks she sent us.

(I apologize for the crappy pictures, hopefully Santa brings a new camera for Christmas.)

Spicy Cheese Straws

The spicy cheese straws with a sweet bite sized texture

Ingredients: Almond Flour, Cheddar Cheese, Canola Oil, Eggs, Baking Soda, Red Pepper, Salt

Textures: Hard, extruded bits. The texture was hard and dense at first but near the end of chewing it turned into a melting pot of cheesy heaven.

Pros: Easy-to-travel size makes it perfect for snacks, cheesy delight and a very nice hint of spice.

Cons: Those with dairy intolerance won’t be able to partake

My thoughts: These little treats are the “Cheez-its” of the SCD world! Seriously, prior to SCD, “Cheez-its” and I were pretty good friends and now I have a replacement! When I ate them, they finished with that unmistakable cheesy taste while also packing a bit of spice. I highly recommend these for those who can handle dairy and love a cheesy snack!

Buttery Crackers

Amazing crackers! Would be great with a yogurt based dip

Ingredients: Almond Flour, SCD Yogurt Cheese, Butter, Baking Soda, Salt, Pepper

Textures: Square, light crackers. A bit of crunch on the first bit, but immediately changed to a velvety chew.

Pros: They are flavored with salt and pepper, which meld very well with the buttery tastes.

Cons: Ummm the fact that I have to wait for them to be shipped to me??? (NONE)

My Thoughts: These Buttery Crackers were my favorite! Every bite was like velvety butter goodness in my mouth! As the velvet butter starts to subside, the finish is most like a regular potato chip leaving me with a salty after-taste and looking to reach for the next one!

Honey Nut Granola

Honey nut granola is gggrreat!

Ingredients: Almond Flour, Raisins, Blueberries, Cranberries, Walnuts, Unsweetened Coconut, Honey, Applesauce, Eggs, Ghee, Canola Oil, Vanilla Extract, Spices, Baking Soda, Salt

Texture: It is a great blend of different textures with soft, hard, and chewy bits.

Pro: To me, it starts with a great nutty taste that melds into a lovely roasted honey taste. When you mix in the dried fruit bits and the blueberry bread bits you really get an amazing combo of flavors and textures in your mouth.

Con: None…

My thoughts: It is great in SCD yogurt, making a sort of SCD yogurt parfait and honestly reminds me a lot of those expensive granola cereals I used to eat prior to SCD. You could reach for it in a sort of trail mix like way but it struck me with a rich flavor, so it would probably be a great addition to a mix bag of almonds and cashews or other nuts.

Tangy Lime Crackers

Can’t truly be described, almost have to be tried!

Ingredients: Almond Flour, Monterey Jack Cheese, Olive Oil, Lime Juice, Turmeric, Chili Powder, Red Pepper, Garlic, Salt

Textures: Hard, round and thick, coined-shaped crackers.

Pros: A great dipping cracker, a different taste that will probably surprise you.

Cons: Texture was too hard for me, I didn’t find the flavor to be too appealing… just plain.

My thoughts: These crackers were a totally different experience. They have a very interesting taste that was a bit confusing and yet intriguing. The taste was a chewy spice mix that finished with a nice lime tang twist. I think they would be great dip chips for an SCD based yogurt dip.

Blueberry Bits

Kid tested, mom and dad approved!

Ingredients: Almond Flour, Blueberries, Butter, Honey, Almond Extract, Salt

Textures: Hard, extruded bits that started dissolving right away on each bite into a great cookie like texture.

Pros: Not overly sweet, great blueberry flavor finish that mixes extremely well with the hard but soft texture.

Cons: Addictive.

My thoughts: Okay, so I know I said the buttery crackers were addicting, and they are in the way that maybe your old go to chip was a great blend of salt and crunch. These bits are in a completely different category for me. They are a formed, extruded texture that is not too hard but not too soft. I can’t really explain it but it is more of a mild cookie texture that smacks you with a blueberry flavor just as you get ready to swallow. The best part is the blueberry flavor is not overly sweet, which makes these seem less like cookies and more like a very great snack food. They remind me a lot of traditional breakfast cereals (the not crazy-sweet kind) and if I still drank milk, I would have no problem putting these in a bowl and drowning them in milk.

Don’t forget that Jan is going to throw in a free sample of the Honey Granola, if you mention our blog in the comments section of your order form (but only until December 31st!)

Stay tuned for the 2nd part of this review. And if you’ve tried any of Jan’s food please leave a comment and let us know what you thought.

Hello,
I’m excited that I just bought your guides and books! I am so into the SCD diet for a healthy lifestyle. I don’t have any severe issues, I just want to rebalance my gut flora and repopulate it with good bacteria. I was wondering if I could still participate in the offer of free bonus of SCD Legal Honey Nut Granola with your order? I did not find any comment section when buying the products.
Please let me know,
Thanks!
